Jet-setting millennials are traveling far more than their parents ever could- both home and abroad, according to new research.

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that domestic travel is soaring - the average person over 50 has visited an average of 16 states in total, while millennials have already been to 12 different states so far.

The typical millennial is also twice as likely to own a passport than those over 50 and will have visited twice the number of countries by the time they are 21 than their parents managed at that age.

The study,  conducted by market researchers OnePoll, found over half (52 percent) of millennial’s parents had never left the country before turning 21 and most managed just one trip abroad in their childhood.

In fact the average respondent over 50 didn’t travel on a plane until they were 20 years old, the research of 1,000 millennials and 1,000 over 50's found.

Yet youngsters today will have been up in the clouds before they turn ten, according to survey commissioned by  travel insurance comparison website InsureMyTrip.com

Half of the millennials polled described traveling abroad as important to them -with nearly a quarter (23 percent) saying their ability to travel is very important to them.

Only 15 percent of adults aged 50 and up expressed the same passion for traveling abroad - 40 percent even said traveling abroad has always been unimportant to them.

The study found the typical respondent spends $1,851 dollars a year towards vacations, road trips and weekend getaways - $99,954 across the average adult lifetime.

“Younger travelers are clearly interested in seeing the world”, said Jim Grace, CEO of InsureMyTrip. “Millennials have less disposable income, which makes them more susceptible to costly travel mishaps and should protect themselves with insurance.”

The study found drinking is still synonymous with millennial lifestyle but, surprisingly, parents are nearly just as likely to drink cocktails while on vacation as millennials.

But young Americans are still trumping their parents’ generation when it comes to staying in bed and sleeping times while on vacation.

The ideal vacation last eight days, according to millennials, but results show parents like to stay longer.

Travel desire is stronger in the younger generations with 70 percent of young Americans describing themselves as a ‘wanderlust’ strong desire to travel compared to just 34 percent of the older generation.

Perhaps that’s why young Americans vacation travel three times each year on average while their parent's journey on a trip just about twice a year.

The study also found that 44 percent of Americans have paid for their entire vacation trip with a credit card.

“$100,000 is a significant amount of money to spend on travel in a lifetime.” Noted Grace, “Travelers should protect that trip investment from uncertainty. Snow storms, airline delays, medical issues and lost baggage can occur to anyone. All travelers should work with us to find the right travel insurance plan.”
