CUFFING SEASON

Single people beware, 'Cuffing Season' is in full swing and millions of daters are looking to lock someone down for the coming winter.

A study of 1,000 single Americans looked at the phenomenon of Cuffing season - the term used to define single people's desire to get a partner to snuggle up with during the colder months and found as many as one in four actively subscribe to this trend.

Surprisingly, single men are MORE likely to step up their efforts in a bid to avoid cold nights in alone, with a third of guys aiming to get a new partner ahead of the winter, compared to a quarter of single girls.

73 percent said cuffing season is very much a real thing and nearly half said they were more receptive to approaches during this time, results showed.

Respondents said Cuffing season officially starts in October according to daters and ideally a partner needs to be 'secured' by Halloween.

The research was commissioned by elite dating app Luxy and found three in ten daters have stayed with someone purely because they didn’t want to be single.

While nearly a fifth of those polled had stayed with a partner they were no longer that keen on simply because they didn’t want to be alone heading into winter.

And singles beware, one in six cold-hearted daters said they deliberately stuck with a partner through the colder months, only to end the relationship once the weather got warmer.

A spokesman for Luxy said: “From where we meet someone to our personal circumstances or even the time of the year as these results suggest, when looking for a partner it’s clear that there are a number of outside factors influencing who we date and why.

“Sometimes this leads us to making connections that might not necessarily be the best match but that seem to work at the time because we don’t want to be alone, whether it’s down to cuffing season or other needs.

“While that might work in the short term it isn’t often a good long-term solution. Taking the time to use a site or app that really matches you with the type of people you are really suited for will lead to much more valuable long-term relationships.”

Seven in ten daters have entered into a relationship in which they’ve had to ‘settle’ for someone in some way, but as many as one in six said they’ve settled for a partner simply to avoid being alone in the cold months.

But that’s why nearly a fifth of singles said they are worried about the possibility of not finding a partner for this coming cold season.

From first contact on an app or dating site, it typically takes the average dater 11 days to fully know if they want something proper with the person they are talking to- allowing time for a couple of dates and plenty of messages.

Men are nearly twice as quick to make their minds up on someone, averaging eight days in comparison to women’s 14 days of deciding the long-term potential of a potential partner.

Results also showed the average singleton will receive 11 approaches or messages from people they aren’t interested in per month and seven messages that they find rude or offensive.

Single Americans spends $150 a month on dating in the quest to find a partner – although one in seven spends at least double that per month.

The research has prompted several dating apps to commemorate Cuffing season at this special time of year. In honor of the trend a special cuffing season gift has been launched for users to send with a ‘cuff me’ request.

The Luxy spokesman added: “Luxy is leading the way as a dating app where people can actually find people they want to be ‘cuffed’ with during the winter. In response to the research, we’ve seen several dating apps want to commemorate the Cuffing Season trend and have joined us in marking this time of year for users hoping to find their match.

“The amount of unwelcomed messages, inappropriate or offensive approaches and general exasperation experienced by many daters shows finding the right matches isn’t easy.
